1. Plugging too many appliances into one outlet
Avoid connecting several high-power appliances through one outlet, adapter, or extension lead. This can exceed the circuit or extension lead’s rated capacity.
2. Using extension leads as permanent wiring
Extension cords are intended for temporary use, not as a substitute for properly installed outlets. Never connect one extension lead into another.
3. Ignoring frequent breaker trips
A circuit breaker that repeatedly trips may be warning you about an overloaded circuit or an electrical fault. Don’t repeatedly reset it and continue using the same setup. Have the problem investigated by a qualified electrician.
4. Continuing to use hot or damaged outlets
Stop using outlets, plugs, switches, or cables that show burn marks, discoloration, cracking, unusual heat, buzzing, sizzling, or a burning smell. These can indicate an electrical problem.
5. Assuming old wiring is safe because it still works
A home’s electrical system can continue functioning while wiring, connections, outlets, or protective equipment deteriorate. Electrical Safety First recommends having older installations professionally checked, particularly where the electrics are more than 50 years old.
