🚽 How Many Times Is It Normal to Wake Up at Night to Urinate?

There isn’t a strict “normal” number based solely on age. Once a night can be common, particularly as people get older, while regularly waking two or more times is more likely to warrant discussion with a healthcare professional—especially if it’s new or disturbing your sleep.

A useful general guide is:

Adults under 60: Ideally, many people can sleep 6–8 hours without urinating, although occasional nighttime urination can be normal.

60–69: Once a night is common; repeated episodes may deserve evaluation.
70–79: Once or twice can occur commonly with aging, but frequent or increasing nighttime urination shouldn’t automatically be considered normal.
80+: Nighttime urination becomes increasingly common; some people may get up several times, but that doesn’t mean it should simply be accepted without considering the cause.

Why does it increase with age?

Several things can contribute, including changes in nighttime urine production, reduced bladder capacity, an enlarged prostate, medications such as diuretics, diabetes, urinary infections, leg swelling, heart or kidney problems, and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

⚠️ When should you get checked?

If you suddenly start waking several times a night, or the problem persists and interferes with sleep, talk with a healthcare professional. Burning or painful urination, blood in the urine, excessive thirst, or other new symptoms are additional reasons to seek evaluation.

Important: Nighttime urination isn’t an inevitable part of aging. The cause matters, and many causes can be treated.
