Common Signs of Low Vitamin B12

Common Signs of Low Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop gradually, and symptoms can be easy to mistake for normal tiredness or other health problems. Common signs include:

Fatigue and weakness — B12 deficiency can cause anemia, leaving you unusually tired or weak.
Pale or yellowish skin — anemia can make skin look pale; certain B12-related changes can also produce a slightly yellow appearance.
Tingling or numbness — especially in the hands and feet. This is important because prolonged B12 deficiency can cause nerve damage.
Balance or walking problems — nerve involvement can affect coordination.
A swollen, sore, or smooth tongue — sometimes accompanied by mouth ulcers.
Shortness of breath or dizziness — particularly when anemia is significant.
Vision problems — rarely, B12 deficiency can affect the optic nerve.
Memory or concentration difficulties — some people experience “brain fog,” confusion, or difficulty concentrating.
Mood changes — irritability, depression, or other psychological symptoms can occur.
Heart palpitations — can occur when B12 deficiency causes significant anemia.
Who is more likely to become deficient?

Risk is higher in people who don’t consume animal products, have certain gastrointestinal conditions or surgeries, have problems absorbing B12, or take certain medications such as metformin or acid-suppressing medicines for prolonged periods.

🩺 Don’t diagnose it from symptoms alone

These symptoms have many possible causes. A blood test can check B12 status, and clinicians may also investigate anemia and other nutritional deficiencies.

Seek medical advice promptly if you develop persistent numbness, weakness, difficulty walking, or cognitive changes, because neurological problems from prolonged B12 deficiency can sometimes become permanent.

And don’t automatically take large doses of B12 just because you’re tired—finding the cause of the symptoms is more useful than guessing.
