🌱 5 Foods Rich in “Estrogen”

A small clarification: foods don’t generally contain human estrogen. Some plants contain phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can interact weakly with estrogen receptors. Their effects are much weaker and different from taking estrogen medication.

Five good dietary sources are:

🌱 Soybeans and soy foods
Soybeans, tofu, tempeh, and edamame are among the richest sources of isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen.

🌾 Flaxseeds
Flaxseed is particularly rich in lignans, another class of phytoestrogens. Ground flaxseed is easier to digest than whole seeds.

🫘 Sesame seeds
Sesame contains lignans and can be easily added to vegetables, salads, oatmeal, or yogurt.

🫘 Lentils and other legumes
Lentils, chickpeas, and beans contain various phytoestrogen compounds along with fiber and protein.

🍑 Certain fruits
Fruits such as peaches, strawberries, and dried fruits contain smaller amounts of phytoestrogen compounds, although they’re considerably less concentrated than soy or flax.

What about hormones?

Eating these foods doesn’t mean you’ll significantly increase your body’s estrogen level. Phytoestrogens have complex, relatively weak effects, and research hasn’t established that eating them reliably raises estrogen in the way hormone therapy does.

If you’re asking because of menopause, low estrogen, fertility, PCOS, or another hormonal concern, tell me which one, and I can explain which foods and lifestyle measures actually have evidence behind them.
