Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car, Here Is Why Every Driver Should Try It

šŸš— Why Some Drivers Put a Glass of Salt in Their Car

You may have seen the tip of leaving a glass or bowl of salt inside a car. The idea is that salt can help with moisture, but there’s an important catch: ordinary table salt is not a particularly effective car dehumidifier.

What is the idea behind it?

Salt can interact with moisture, and people sometimes recommend placing a small container of salt in the vehicle to help absorb humidity. The goal is usually to reduce:

Condensation on windows
A damp or musty smell
Excess moisture after rain or snow
Moisture trapped in floor mats or upholstery

However, salt doesn’t work like a dedicated moisture absorber. Calcium chloride products, commonly sold as moisture absorbers, are much more effective at pulling water from the air.

āš ļø Don’t put loose salt directly in your car

A container can spill while you’re driving. Saltwater can also be corrosive to some metals and electrical components.

If you’re dealing with persistent condensation, a better approach is to:

Remove wet mats and allow them to dry.
Check for water leaks around doors, windows, and the trunk.
Use the vehicle’s A/C and fresh-air/defrost setting to remove humidity.
Consider a purpose-made automotive moisture absorber.
Have the vehicle checked if the interior repeatedly becomes damp.

Bottom line: A glass of salt isn’t a magic car hack. If your goal is to keep the windshield clear and the cabin dry, controlling the source of moisture and using the car’s climate-control system is much more effective.
