6 Effective Ways to Prevent Flies From Entering Your Home

Flies are attracted to food, garbage, moisture, and strong odors. A few simple habits can make your home much less inviting.

Keep windows and doors screened
Repair holes in window screens and consider a screen door for frequently opened entrances.

Keep food covered
Store fruit, leftovers, and other foods in sealed containers. Don’t leave pet food sitting out for long periods.

Empty garbage regularly
Use bins with tight-fitting lids and clean them periodically, especially if they contain food waste.

Clean spills and crumbs quickly
Even small amounts of sugary or greasy food can attract flies. Pay particular attention to countertops, floors, and areas beneath appliances.

Eliminate standing water and damp areas
Keep sinks, drains, mops, and trash areas clean and dry. Fix leaking pipes or faucets.

Keep entry points closed
Don’t leave exterior doors open unnecessarily. Caulking gaps around windows and doors can also reduce insect entry.

A simple natural deterrent

You can place small amounts of basil, mint, or lavender near windows and doors for their pleasant scent, although these aren’t guaranteed fly repellents. Physical barriers and good sanitation are much more reliable.

If you suddenly have a large number of flies indoors, look for a hidden source such as rotting food, garbage, a drain, or—occasionally—a dead animal in a wall or attic.
