7 signs that indicate your heart is in serious danger

7 Signs Your Heart May Be in Serious Trouble

Some symptoms can indicate a heart attack, dangerous heart rhythm, heart failure, or another cardiovascular emergency. They shouldn’t be dismissed as “just getting older.”

Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain — especially if it lasts several minutes, keeps returning, or occurs with exertion. It may feel like heaviness, fullness, burning, or uncomfortable pressure rather than sharp pain.

Shortness of breath — particularly if it appears suddenly, occurs at rest, or is accompanied by chest discomfort.

Pain spreading beyond the chest — discomfort may travel into the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.

Unexplained sweating, nausea, or vomiting — particularly when occurring together with chest discomfort or shortness of breath.

Fainting or near-fainting — especially during exercise or together with palpitations, chest pain, or breathlessness.

Persistent racing, pounding, or irregular heartbeat — occasional palpitations can be benign, but a sustained abnormal heartbeat accompanied by dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath needs urgent assessment.

New swelling and breathlessness — swelling of the ankles/legs, rapid weight gain, difficulty breathing when lying down, or waking up gasping can be signs of heart failure.

🚨 Don’t wait for all seven

A heart attack doesn’t always look like dramatic chest pain. Older adults, women, and people with diabetes can sometimes have less typical symptoms, such as unusual fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, or weakness.

If someone has new chest pressure/pain, severe difficulty breathing, collapses, or develops symptoms suggestive of a heart attack, call your local emergency service immediately. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital.

Important: These symptoms don’t necessarily mean your heart is failing—many have other causes. But when they are sudden, severe, or new, it’s safer to have them evaluated promptly.
