Stop urinating at night: eat bananas this way

The claim “Stop urinating at night: eat bananas this way” is not supported by good evidence. Eating bananas—whether alone, before bed, or prepared in a particular way—has not been established as a treatment for nighttime urination (nocturia).

Bananas are rich in potassium, but that doesn’t mean they reliably reduce nighttime urine production. In fact, people with advanced kidney disease may need to limit high-potassium foods such as bananas.

If you have swollen legs, elevating your legs earlier in the day may help move retained fluid before bedtime.

Review medications with your clinician—diuretics (“water pills”) can contribute to nighttime urination, and timing may sometimes be adjusted.

Frequent nighttime urination can also be related to an enlarged prostate, overactive bladder, diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnea, or urinary problems, so persistent nocturia shouldn’t simply be treated with a food remedy.

Bottom line: bananas are a nutritious food, but there is no proven “special way” to eat them that stops nighttime urination.
