These Could Be Early Signs of Gout — Don’t Ignore Them
A suddenly red, swollen, hot, and extremely painful joint can be a sign of gout, especially when it develops quickly and affects a single joint.
Gout occurs when uric acid crystals build up inside a joint, triggering intense inflammation. Although the big toe is a classic location, gout can also affect the knee, ankle, or other joints.
⚠️ Common signs of a gout attack
- 🔴 A joint becomes noticeably red and swollen
- 🔥 The area feels hot or unusually warm
- 😣 Severe tenderness—even light touch may hurt
- 🦵 Pain develops suddenly, often over several hours
- 🌙 Symptoms may begin or become intense during the night
- ↩️ Attacks may improve and then return
But don’t assume every red, swollen knee is gout
A painful, hot, swollen joint can also be caused by infection, injury, inflammatory arthritis, or other conditions.
A joint infection can be an emergency and can look similar to gout.
🚨 Get medical attention promptly if:
You have a hot, swollen joint plus fever or chills, feel very unwell, cannot move the joint normally, or the pain is severe and rapidly worsening.
