10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know
A stroke can happen suddenly, and every minute matters. The most important thing isn’t memorizing a long list—it’s recognizing sudden changes and getting emergency help immediately.
1. 😕 Sudden confusion
New difficulty understanding what people are saying or knowing what to say.
2. 🗣️ Sudden trouble speaking
Speech may become slurred, strange, or difficult to understand.
3. 🙂 One side of the face droops
Ask the person to smile. An uneven smile or facial numbness can be a warning sign.
4. 💪 Sudden weakness or numbness
Especially in the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body.
5. 👁️ Sudden vision changes
Blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes can occur.
6. 🚶 Sudden trouble walking
Unexpected difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or poor coordination can signal a stroke.
7. 🤕 Sudden severe headache
A sudden, unusually severe headache with no known cause can be a warning sign, particularly when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
8. ✋ One arm suddenly drifts downward
Ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm is weak or numb and drifts down, act immediately.
9. 🧠 Sudden difficulty understanding
Someone may suddenly struggle to understand ordinary speech or follow simple instructions.
10. ⚠️ Symptoms that disappear
Don’t assume everything is fine if the symptoms resolve after a few minutes. A TIA (“mini-stroke”) is a medical emergency and can warn of a future stroke.
