Orchids: One Tablespoon Can Give Them a Boost — But Here’s What Actually Helps Them Bloom
Want your orchid to produce more flowers?
You may see homemade “miracle fertilizer” recipes online, but there’s no single tablespoon of kitchen ingredient that guarantees continuous blooming.
Orchids flower best when their basic growing needs are right.
🌱 What orchids really need
1. The right light ☀️
Give your orchid bright, indirect light. Too little light can reduce flowering, while intense direct sun can scorch the leaves.
2. Appropriate watering 💧
Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to dry appropriately before watering again.
Don’t let the plant sit in stagnant water.
3. Orchid fertilizer 🌿
A balanced fertilizer formulated for orchids can provide nutrients the plant needs for healthy growth and flowering.
Follow the product’s dilution and frequency instructions rather than guessing with concentrated homemade mixtures.
4. Good drainage 🪴
Orchid roots need air as well as moisture. Use an appropriate orchid potting medium and a container with good drainage.
5. Temperature and day/night changes 🌙
Many common orchids, including Phalaenopsis, can benefit from a modest difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures to encourage flowering.
🥄 What about the “one tablespoon” trick?
If you’re referring to a homemade fertilizer such as baking soda, sugar, coffee, rice water, or another kitchen ingredient, be cautious.
These substances aren’t automatically better for orchids, and concentrated mixtures can damage roots or alter the growing medium.
A properly formulated orchid fertilizer is a much more predictable choice.
