Itchy Scalp: What Are the Possible Causes? A Dermatologist Explains
An itchy scalp is common—but “dandruff” isn’t always the answer.
Your scalp can itch for many different reasons, and the right treatment depends on what’s causing it.
1. 🧴 Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis
This is one of the most common causes.
You may notice flaking, itching, and sometimes greasy or yellowish scales, particularly around the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, ears, or nose.
Anti-dandruff shampoos containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione can help some people.
2. 🌿 Contact dermatitis
A new shampoo, conditioner, hair dye, fragrance, oil, or styling product can trigger an itchy or irritated scalp.
If itching began soon after introducing a new product, stop using it and see whether the symptoms improve.
Hair dyes containing certain chemicals can cause particularly strong allergic reactions.
3. 🧠 Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis can cause thick, well-defined patches with silvery-white scales.
The rash may extend beyond the hairline and can be quite itchy.
It often requires specific treatment rather than ordinary dandruff shampoo.
4. 🦠 Fungal infection
Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) is more common in children but can affect adults.
Possible signs include scaling, broken hairs, bald patches, itching, or tender areas.
It usually requires medical treatment, often with prescription antifungal medication.
5. 🪳 Head lice
Intense itching—especially around the back of the neck and behind the ears—can occur with head lice.
Look closely for live lice or firmly attached nits rather than assuming every white speck is lice.
6. 💇 Dry or irritated skin
Cold weather, very hot showers, frequent washing, harsh products, or low humidity can irritate the scalp and cause itching or flaking.
