Visible Veins on Your Hands: What Do They Mean?

Visible veins on the hands are usually not a sign of a serious disease. They can become more noticeable with normal aging, low body fat, exercise, heat, dehydration, or simply genetics. As skin becomes thinner with age, veins can also appear more prominent.

Visible hand veins do not by themselves indicate cancer, a blood clot, or “poor circulation.”

When to pay attention

Have a healthcare professional assess the area if a vein becomes suddenly prominent and is painful, red, warm, hard, or swollen, or if one hand or arm suddenly becomes significantly more swollen than the other.

Seek urgent care for sudden arm swelling accompanied by shortness of breath or chest pain, because a blood clot can occasionally travel to the lungs.

Otherwise, prominent veins that have developed gradually and aren’t painful are generally a normal physical finding, especially in older adults.

If the viral headline you’re referring to says “visible hand veins are a signal of cancer,” that claim is not supported by the appearance of hand veins alone.
