The 3 Types of Breakfast That Could Harm Your Kidneys Over Time

Breakfast is an important part of a healthy diet, but some breakfast choices can be high in salt, added sugar, and heavily processed ingredients. Eating these foods frequently may contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which are major risk factors for kidney disease.

Here are three types of breakfast worth limiting.

1. Processed Meat Breakfasts

Breakfasts containing bacon, sausage, ham, hot dogs, or other processed meats can be high in sodium. Too much sodium can raise blood pressure, and high blood pressure can damage the kidneys over time.

Try replacing processed meats with fresh, minimally processed foods such as eggs, vegetables, or fresh poultry when appropriate.

2. Very Sugary Cereals and Pastries

Some breakfast cereals, doughnuts, sweet pastries, and similar foods contain large amounts of added sugar and refined carbohydrates. Regularly consuming excessive added sugar can contribute to unhealthy weight gain and diabetes, both of which can increase kidney-disease risk.

Choose oatmeal or a lower-sugar whole-grain cereal instead, and add fresh fruit for natural sweetness.

3. Highly Processed or Packaged Breakfasts

Instant meals, packaged breakfast foods, and some frozen or ready-to-eat products can contain significant amounts of sodium and phosphorus additives. For people who already have kidney disease, these nutrients may need special attention.

Check food labels and choose products with less sodium and fewer ingredients containing “phos” when advised by a healthcare professional.

A Better Kidney-Friendly Breakfast

A simple breakfast could include oatmeal, fresh fruit, unsalted nuts, vegetables, or eggs, depending on your individual health needs. People who already have kidney disease may need a personalized diet because recommended amounts of sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein can vary.

Bottom line: Breakfast itself does not harm the kidneys. The bigger concern is regularly eating highly processed foods that are high in salt, added sugar, or certain additives.
