Dry Mouth Every Morning? Don’t Ignore Persistent Symptoms

Waking up with a dry mouth occasionally is common. Saliva production naturally decreases during sleep, and sleeping with your mouth open or snoring can make the dryness worse. But persistent dry mouth isn’t simply something you have to accept as you get older.

What could be causing it?

1. 👄 Mouth breathing or snoring
Nasal congestion, snoring, or sleeping with your mouth open can dry out the mouth overnight.

2. 💊 Medications
Hundreds of medications can reduce saliva, including some used for high blood pressure, depression, allergies, congestion, pain, and bladder problems. Don’t stop a prescribed medication without speaking with your doctor or pharmacist.

3. 💧 Dehydration
Not getting enough fluids can contribute to dry mouth, particularly in older adults.

4. 🩺 Diabetes and other conditions
Persistent dry mouth can occur with diabetes, Sjögren’s disease, certain nerve disorders, and some cancer treatments. Dry mouth alone, however, does not diagnose any of these conditions.

What can help?

  • Sip water regularly during the day.
  • Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva.
  • Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol.
  • Limit very sugary or acidic drinks.
  • Use a humidifier if your bedroom air is particularly dry.
  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and maintain regular dental checkups.

🚩 When should you get checked?

If your dry mouth continues for weeks, is getting worse, or makes it difficult to chew, swallow or speak, make an appointment with a doctor or dentist. Persistent dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay, gum problems and oral infections because saliva normally protects the mouth.

If dry mouth is accompanied by unusual thirst and frequent urination, it’s particularly worth discussing with a healthcare professional because these can occur with diabetes.
