NEVER LEAVE A CHARGER IN AN OUTLET WITHOUT YOUR PHONE: I’LL REVEAL THE 3 MAIN REASONS

That headline is partly misleading. A modern, good-quality phone charger generally does not become an immediate fire hazard simply because it remains plugged in without a phone connected. However, there are legitimate reasons to unplug chargers when they’re not needed.

3 good reasons to unplug an unused charger

  1. It still consumes a small amount of electricity
Chargers can draw a small amount of standby power even when no phone is connected. The amount varies and is usually quite small.
  2. Damaged or poor-quality chargers can be hazardous
Frayed cables, cracked housings, loose plugs, counterfeit products, or chargers with defective components can increase the risk of overheating, electric shock, or fire.
  3. It reduces unnecessary electrical equipment left energized
Unplugging unused chargers eliminates their standby consumption and means a faulty charger isn’t continuously connected to the mains.

Bottom line: You don’t need to panic if you occasionally leave a reputable charger plugged in. But unplug damaged, unusually hot, buzzing, or low-quality chargers, and avoid covering chargers while they’re operating.
