This Is Why We Get Cramps at Night

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, involuntary muscle contractions, most commonly affecting the calf, foot or thigh. They can be extremely painful, but in many people there is no single identifiable cause.

Common reasons include

  • Muscle fatigue or overuse
  • Staying in one position for a long time
  • Dehydration, especially after heavy sweating
  • Reduced physical activity
  • Certain medications
  • Nerve problems, including diabetic neuropathy
  • Problems affecting blood flow
  • Kidney, thyroid or other metabolic conditions

The risk also increases with age.

🦵 What to do when a cramp strikes

For a calf cramp, gently straighten the leg and pull your toes upward toward your face. Massage the muscle and, if safe, stand and walk slowly. Heat from a warm shower or bath may also help relax the muscle.

🌙 How to prevent them

Try gentle calf stretching before bed, regular light activity and adequate fluid intake. Keeping heavy bedding from pushing your feet downward may also help some people.

Don’t automatically assume that cramps mean you need magnesium or potassium supplements. Mineral deficiencies can contribute in some circumstances, but many ordinary nighttime cramps have another cause or no clear cause at all.

🚩 When cramps deserve medical attention

Talk with a healthcare professional if cramps are frequent, severe, repeatedly disrupting sleep, associated with muscle weakness, or accompanied by leg swelling, redness, skin changes or persistent pain.
