Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean?
Pain on the left side can have many different causes, ranging from a pulled muscle or digestive problem to conditions requiring urgent treatment. The location alone isn’t enough to determine the cause.
❤️ 1. Heart-related pain
Pain or pressure in the chest can spread to the left or right arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. A heart attack can also cause shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Symptoms can be less typical in older adults and some people may have little or no chest pain.
🦴 2. Muscle, rib or joint problems
A strained muscle, irritated rib, or inflammation around a joint can cause localized pain, often made worse by movement or pressing on the area.
🫁 3. Lung or chest conditions
Problems such as pneumonia or inflammation around the lungs can cause one-sided chest pain, particularly when breathing deeply or coughing.
🫘 4. Kidney problems
Pain toward the left flank or back can occur with kidney stones or kidney infection, particularly when accompanied by urinary symptoms or fever.
🩻 5. Abdominal or digestive causes
Gas, indigestion, constipation and other digestive conditions can cause pain on the left side of the abdomen. More serious causes are also possible, depending on the symptoms and severity.
⚡ 6. Nerve-related pain or shingles
Irritated nerves can cause burning, tingling, numbness or shooting pain. Shingles can cause pain or unusual skin sensitivity on one side, sometimes before the characteristic rash appears.
🚨 When left-sided pain is an emergency
Call your local emergency service immediately for new or unexplained chest pain, especially if it comes with:
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fainting or severe dizziness
- Pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back or upper abdomen
- Sudden weakness/numbness or trouble speaking
- Severe or rapidly worsening pain
These can indicate a heart attack, stroke or another serious condition.
