“This Burns Weeds in 1 Day! They Never Grow Again” — Does It Work?
Claims that a homemade mixture can burn weeds in one day and prevent them from ever returning are usually exaggerated. You can kill the visible foliage quickly, but many weeds regrow from their roots, and some treatments can damage nearby plants and soil.
A safer approach
- Pull or dig weeds, removing as much of the root system as possible.
- For larger areas, smother weeds with cardboard or several layers of newspaper followed by mulch. This blocks light and can help prevent regrowth.
- Keep garden beds covered with 2–3 inches of appropriate mulch, leaving space around plant stems.
- For persistent weeds, a properly labeled herbicide can be effective when used exactly according to its instructions.
⚠️ Be careful with viral “weed killers”
Mixtures involving vinegar, salt, bleach or household chemicals can be problematic. Salt can accumulate in soil and harm desirable plants, while bleach and other household chemicals aren’t appropriate garden herbicides.
Don’t mix household chemicals together, and don’t spray homemade mixtures where they can run into ponds, drains or waterways.
