These specific nutrients can address leg fatigue and swelling without medication or surgery, and one common food contains nearly all of them ..

These Nutrients Can Fix Leg Fatigue and Swelling” — Is That True?

This headline is misleading. Certain nutrients are important for normal muscle function and overall health, but leg swelling isn’t usually something that can be cured simply by eating one food or taking vitamins.

Nutrients that matter

  • Potassium — important for muscle and nerve function. Foods include bananas, potatoes, beans and yogurt.
  • Magnesium — involved in muscle and nerve function. Good sources include nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains.
  • Iron — needed to make hemoglobin; iron deficiency can contribute to fatigue, but supplementation should generally be based on evidence of deficiency.
  • Vitamin B12 — deficiency can cause fatigue and neurological symptoms.
  • Protein — inadequate protein intake can contribute to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, edema.

But more isn’t necessarily better. Potassium or magnesium supplements can be dangerous for some people, particularly those with kidney problems or who take certain medications.

🥔 What about the “one common food”?

If the post is referring to a banana, it does provide potassium, magnesium and some other nutrients—but it does not contain nearly all the nutrients needed to treat leg fatigue and swelling.

More importantly, swelling (edema) can result from prolonged sitting or standing, medications, vein problems, kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, inflammation or a blood clot.

For mild swelling, measures such as moving regularly, elevating the legs and reducing excess dietary salt may help, depending on the cause.

🚨 Don’t assume swelling is nutritional

Sudden swelling in one leg, particularly with pain, warmth or discoloration, needs prompt medical assessment because a blood clot is one possible cause. Swelling accompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting or coughing blood requires emergency medical attention.
