8 Things You Shouldn’t Put in the Dishwasher — and Why
Dishwashers are great for everyday plates and utensils, but heat, strong detergent and high-pressure water can damage certain materials. Always check the item’s care instructions first.
1. 🪵 Wooden utensils and cutting boards
Wood can warp, crack, swell or lose its finish from prolonged heat and moisture. Hand-wash and dry promptly.
2. 🍳 Cast-iron cookware
Dishwasher detergent and prolonged exposure to water can strip seasoning and encourage rust. Hand-wash, dry thoroughly and maintain the seasoning.
3. 🔪 Sharp kitchen knives
Dishwasher cycles can dull blades, while knives can bump against other items or damage dishwasher racks. Hand washing is preferable, especially for quality knives.
4. 🥘 Some nonstick pans
Even when a manufacturer labels a pan dishwasher-safe, repeated dishwasher cleaning can shorten the life of some nonstick coatings. Follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions.
5. 🥂 Crystal and delicate glassware
High temperatures and strong detergents can cause etching, cloudiness or breakage. Delicate crystal and hand-blown glass are better washed by hand.
6. 🏺 Antique or hand-painted china
Decorations, gold or metal rims can fade, wear or become damaged during dishwasher cycles.
7. 🥤 Insulated travel mugs and containers
Heat and water can damage seals or insulation, potentially ruining the vacuum insulation. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before putting them in.
8. 🥉 Copper, pewter and some decorative metals
Dishwasher heat and detergent can cause tarnishing, discoloration or pitting. These are generally better cleaned by hand.
