The viral warning is partly true—but silverfish aren’t a sign that your home is dirty or dangerous.
💧 Check for excess moisture
Silverfish prefer damp, humid environments, so finding several of them can be a clue to check for:
- Leaking pipes or faucets
- Condensation
- Poor bathroom ventilation
- Damp basements, crawl spaces or closets
- Areas with standing water
Reducing moisture is one of the most effective ways to discourage them.
📦 Also check clutter and stored items
Silverfish can feed on paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, fabrics and starchy foods. Large or persistent infestations can damage stored books, papers and textiles.
🧹 What to do
- Fix leaks and sources of dampness.
- Improve ventilation or use a dehumidifier in persistently humid areas.
- Vacuum regularly and reduce piles of cardboard, papers and clutter.
- Store important documents and dry foods in sealed containers.
- Seal cracks and gaps around pipes, baseboards and windows.
One silverfish isn’t necessarily a problem. An occasional insect can simply wander indoors. If you’re seeing them frequently or finding damage to books, paper or clothing, that’s when it’s worth investigating for a larger infestation.
