Slow-Cooker Cabbage That’s Surprisingly Delicious
That viral headline refers to a few different recipes, but one popular version uses cabbage + smoked sausage + diced tomatoes + chicken broth. The cabbage slowly becomes tender while absorbing the smoky, savory flavors.
🍲 4-ingredient version
- 1 small head green cabbage, cut into 6–8 wedges
- 1 lb (450 g) smoked sausage, sliced
- 1 can (14.5 oz/410 g) diced tomatoes
- 4 cups chicken broth
👩🍳 Method
- Put the cabbage wedges into the slow cooker.
- Scatter the sliced sausage over the cabbage.
- Pour the diced tomatoes over everything.
- Add the chicken broth.
- Cover and cook 6–8 hours on LOW or 3–4 hours on HIGH, until the cabbage is very tender.
- Gently stir before serving.
Tip: Keep the cabbage wedges relatively large and leave some core attached so they don’t completely fall apart during cooking.
🥓 Another 3-ingredient variation
For something even simpler, there’s also a version using cabbage, bacon and water. The bacon renders its fat as it cooks, flavoring the cabbage.
