Myth or Medical Reality: Does Eating Raw Onions Cause a Common Health Problem?
If the “common health problem” in the viral headline is heartburn or acid reflux, there is some truth—but the claim is exaggerated.
🔥 Raw onions can trigger heartburn in some people
Onions are recognized as a potential trigger for heartburn. A small clinical study found that raw onion increased reflux episodes and acid exposure in people who already experienced heartburn.
Raw onions can also cause gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort, particularly in people sensitive to fermentable carbohydrates such as fructans.
But they don’t cause GERD in everyone
Eating raw onions doesn’t mean you’ll develop chronic acid reflux. Food triggers vary considerably from person to person. Current GERD guidance recommends identifying and avoiding foods that actually trigger your symptoms rather than imposing a universal list of forbidden foods.
If onions bother you, you might find that smaller portions or cooked onions are easier to tolerate.
🧅 Don’t confuse discomfort with an allergy
Gas, belching or heartburn after onions doesn’t necessarily mean you’re allergic to them. A true food allergy is uncommon and can cause symptoms such as hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty.
🚩 When heartburn deserves medical attention
If heartburn occurs more than twice a week, persists despite over-the-counter treatment, or is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting or unexplained weight loss, talk with a healthcare professional.
