“If you find a silverfish in your home, it means you need to…” — what does it really mean?
Finding a silverfish usually isn’t a sign of something dangerous. They’re harmless to people, but their presence can be a useful clue about conditions in your home.
💧 1. Check for excess moisture
Silverfish prefer damp, humid areas, so finding them can indicate that somewhere in the home has too much moisture. Check bathrooms, under sinks, basements, closets, and around plumbing for leaks or condensation.
🏠 2. Improve ventilation
Run bathroom exhaust fans and consider a dehumidifier in persistently damp areas. Reducing humidity makes the environment less favorable for silverfish.
📦 3. Clean up hiding places
Silverfish can hide in cardboard boxes, piles of paper, books, closets and clutter. They also feed on materials containing starches and certain glues. Store important papers and fabrics in sealed containers.
🔍 4. Look for leaks
Check around:
- Sink and toilet plumbing
- Shower and bathtub
- Washing machine connections
- Basement walls
- Windows and ceilings
Repairing leaks and improving airflow can be more effective than simply spraying the insects.
🪳 Should you panic if you see one?
No. One silverfish doesn’t necessarily mean you have an infestation. They’re nocturnal and can wander considerable distances inside a house while searching for food and moisture.
If you’re seeing many of them repeatedly, however, it’s worth investigating moisture and possible entry points.
