Could a Japanese-Style Green Juice “Clean” Your Colon and Reduce Belly Inflammation?

A green juice can certainly be part of a healthy diet, but the claim that it “cleans your colon” or removes toxins is not supported by good evidence. Your digestive system already eliminates waste; there is no need for a juice cleanse. Research has not found compelling evidence that detox diets remove toxins from the body.

A simple green drink

You could blend:

  • 🥒 ½ cucumber
  • 🥬 A handful of spinach
  • 🍏 ½ green apple
  • 🍋 A squeeze of lemon
  • 💧 1 cup water
  • Optional: a small piece of fresh ginger

Blend rather than strain if possible. Keeping the pulp retains more of the plant’s fiber.

Could it reduce bloating?

Possibly, depending on why you’re bloated—but it’s not guaranteed. Increasing fiber and fluids can help constipation, and constipation itself can contribute to abdominal discomfort and bloating. Adults generally need about 22–34 grams of fiber daily, depending on age and sex.

On the other hand, suddenly consuming a large amount of vegetables or fiber can actually cause more gas and bloating, particularly in people with IBS. Increasing fiber gradually is usually better.

One important distinction

If by “inflamed abdomen” you mean persistent abdominal swelling, pain, tenderness, vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a rapidly enlarging abdomen, don’t try to treat it with green juice. Those symptoms warrant medical evaluation.
