This one vitamin could help stop you from waking up to pee every night

If you’re checking the headline “This one vitamin could help stop you from waking up to pee every night,” the vitamin usually being promoted is vitamin D.

The claim is not established enough to say that vitamin D will stop nocturia (waking during the night to urinate). Research has explored links between vitamin-D status and urinary symptoms, but current evidence does not support taking vitamin D specifically as a proven treatment for nocturia.

Why you might be waking up to urinate

Nighttime urination can have many causes, including:

  • Drinking a lot of fluid late in the evening
  • Caffeine or alcohol
  • An overactive bladder
  • Enlarged prostate in men
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar
  • Leg swelling
  • Certain medications, including some diuretics
  • Sleep apnea
  • Changes in kidney function or nighttime urine production

Because the causes are so varied, treatment should target the underlying cause rather than simply taking a vitamin.

What you can try safely

Reducing fluids for the couple of hours before bedtime, limiting evening caffeine/alcohol, addressing leg swelling during the day, and reviewing medication timing with a clinician can help some people. Keeping a bladder diary—recording what and when you drink and when you urinate—can also help identify the cause.

Don’t take high-dose vitamin D just for this purpose. Excess vitamin D can actually cause increased urination and thirst, as well as kidney stones and other serious problems.
