These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease 🩺

Liver disease can be difficult to recognize because many people have few or no symptoms in the early stages. Some visible changes become more likely when liver disease has progressed. (NIDDK)

Signs worth getting checked

  • Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice) — caused by increased bilirubin.
  • Swollen abdomen — fluid buildup, called ascites.
  • Swollen ankles, feet, or legs — fluid retention can occur with advanced liver disease.
  • Spider-like red blood vessels on the skin (spider angiomas).
  • Easy bruising or bleeding.
  • Muscle loss or unexplained weight loss.
  • Dark urine or unusually pale stools.
  • Persistent itching, sometimes severe.
  • Confusion, memory problems, or personality changes can occur in advanced disease. (NIDDK)

⚠️ Don’t rely on appearance alone

Fatty liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD) is often silent, meaning someone can have liver disease without obvious outward signs. Doctors may use blood tests, imaging, and sometimes other testing to determine whether liver damage is present. (NIDDK)

Seek prompt medical attention for new jaundice, significant abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, or new confusion.

Bottom line: These signs can be clues, but they don’t prove liver disease. If you’re noticing several of them—or they are new or worsening—it’s worth getting medically evaluated rather than trying a “liver detox” or home remedy.
