10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know 🦵⚠️

A blood clot in a deep vein is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It most commonly occurs in one leg and can sometimes travel to the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. (nhs.uk)

Possible warning signs

  1. Swelling in one leg
  2. Pain or tenderness without an obvious injury
  3. Throbbing or cramping pain, particularly in the calf or thigh
  4. A heavy or aching feeling in the affected leg
  5. Warmth of the skin over the painful area
  6. Red or darker-colored skin
  7. Swollen or more prominent veins
  8. Pain that becomes worse when walking or standing
  9. Sudden swelling around the calf, ankle, or foot
  10. Unexplained symptoms affecting only one leg rather than both legs. (nhs.uk)

Important: A DVT can sometimes cause few or no symptoms, so you cannot rule it out simply because the leg doesn’t look dramatically swollen. (CDC Stacks)

🚨 Know the emergency signs

If you have possible DVT symptoms and suddenly develop shortness of breath, chest pain (especially pain that worsens with breathing), coughing up blood, a very fast heartbeat, severe lightheadedness, or fainting, the clot may have traveled to your lungs. Seek emergency medical care immediately. (nhs.uk)

Don’t try to diagnose a blood clot based on symptoms alone. A medical assessment and, when appropriate, an ultrasound are used to diagnose DVT. (CDC)

Bottom line: New one-sided leg swelling, unexplained pain, warmth, or redness should not be ignored—especially after surgery, prolonged immobility or long travel, or if you’ve previously had a blood clot.
