Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them Fresh Again

The good news: many synthetic, down, and feather pillows can be washed, but always check the care label first. Memory-foam pillows are different and generally should not go in the washing machine.

🧺 For washable synthetic, down or feather pillows

  1. Remove the pillowcase and protector.
  2. Check the care label for washing and drying instructions.
  3. If possible, wash two pillows together to keep the washer balanced.
  4. Use a small amount of liquid laundry detergent—about a tablespoon is recommended by Whirlpool.
  5. Choose a gentle cycle and use the warmest water permitted by the care label.
  6. Add an extra rinse if your machine has that option, so detergent doesn’t remain inside the pillow.

✨ What about yellow stains?

Yellowing is often caused by sweat, body oils and moisture accumulating over time. A normal wash may improve the appearance, but an old yellow pillow won’t necessarily become perfectly white.

If the care label permits it, a laundry oxygen bleach/color-safe whitening product can be considered. Don’t use chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically says it’s safe. Always follow the product and pillow instructions.

🌸 How to make them smell fresh

The most important step isn’t perfume—it’s getting the pillow completely dry.

For machine-dryable pillows, use the drying temperature specified on the care label. Low/no heat is commonly recommended, and dryer balls can help fluff them. Don’t put the pillow back on the bed while it’s still damp, because trapped moisture can contribute to mildew and unpleasant odors.

🧠 Memory-foam pillows need different treatment

Don’t throw memory foam into the washing machine. For a quick freshening, Whirlpool recommends removing the cover, sprinkling baking soda over the foam, leaving it for about an hour, and vacuuming it off. For stains, spot-clean with diluted laundry detergent and allow the foam to dry completely.

🚫 Avoid the viral “miracle” mixtures

You don’t need a complicated recipe involving multiple household chemicals. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. And don’t soak a pillow in an unknown mixture unless its care instructions allow it.
