How to Remove Scratches From Glasses — Does a “Simple Recipe” Work?
Unfortunately, you generally can’t safely remove a scratch from an eyeglass lens at home. Scratches are physical damage to the lens surface or its coating, not dirt that can simply be cleaned away.
🚫 Be careful with viral recipes
You may see recommendations for:
- Toothpaste
- Baking soda
- Car wax
- Glass polish
- Metal or plastic polish
These may temporarily make a scratch look less obvious, but rubbing abrasive products onto prescription lenses can damage anti-reflective, UV or other protective coatings and potentially make vision worse.
✅ What you can safely do
- Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water to remove dust.
- Use a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid or a lens cleaner designed for glasses.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry gently with a clean microfiber lens cloth.
If the scratch remains, it’s not something cleaning will fix.
🔧 The real solution
For a significant scratch, an optician can determine whether the lens needs replacing. Trying to polish a prescription lens yourself can alter its optical surface and prescription.
If the glasses are relatively new, also check whether the retailer or manufacturer has a scratch-replacement or lens warranty.
