Your inner ear contains tiny calcium-carbonate particles called otoconia. Normally, they sit in a part of the inner ear that helps your brain detect gravity and movement.
Sometimes these particles become displaced and enter one of the semicircular canals, which detect head rotation. When you move your head, the misplaced particles move through the fluid in the canal and send an abnormal signal to your brain. Your eyes and inner ear then give your brain conflicting information, producing the sensation of spinning. This is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
