High blood pressure, high cholesterol: Avoid these 3 habits in the morning

Managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol is largely about consistency throughout the day, but how you start your morning can set the tone for your cardiovascular health. Sudden spikes in blood pressure or poor metabolic choices right after waking can place unnecessary strain on your heart and arteries.
Health experts recommend avoiding these three common morning habits if you are managing hypertension or high cholesterol:

1. Jumping Out of Bed Too Quickly and Rushing

  • Why it hurts your heart: When you wake up, your body naturally experiences a physiological phenomenon known as the morning surge. Blood pressure and heart rate naturally rise as your body transitions from sleep to wakefulness to prepare you for the day. If you immediately leap out of bed in a panicked rush, or immediately face high-stress tasks (like checking stressful work emails or rushing out the door), you trigger a surge of stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline) that can spike your blood pressure sharply and strain your cardiovascular system.
  • The healthier swap: Take 2 to 3 minutes before getting out of bed to stretch gently, take a few deep, slow breaths, and let your body acclimate. Give yourself a buffer so your morning routine feels calm rather than chaotic.

2. Eating a Heavy, Saturated-Fat-and-Sugar Breakfast

  • Why it hurts your heart: Traditional breakfast favorites—like bacon, sausage, buttery pastries, sugary cereals, or white toast loaded with jam—deliver a double blow to your heart. Saturated fats can acute-impair endothelial function (the ability of your blood vessels to dilate properly) and contribute to raising LDL (“bad”) cholesterol over time. Meanwhile, refined sugars cause a rapid blood sugar spike, leading to inflammation and subsequent energy crashes.
  • The healthier swap: Opt for a heart-healthy, cholesterol-lowering breakfast. Focus on soluble fiber, which binds to cholesterol in the digestive tract and helps eliminate it. Excellent choices include a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal topped with berries and walnuts, chia seed pudding, or avocado on whole-grain toast with an egg.

3. Skipping Hydration (or Reaching for Sweet/Salty Morning Drinks)

  • Why it hurts your heart: After 7 to 8 hours of sleep, your body is naturally in a mild state of dehydration. When you are dehydrated, your blood volume decreases slightly, which causes blood vessels to constrict and can make your blood more viscous (thick), forcing your heart to work harder to circulate it. Conversely, reaching for a heavily salted breakfast drink or a sugar-laden coffee shop beverage can rapidly drive up your blood pressure or negatively impact your lipid profile.
  • The healthier swap: Make drinking a large glass of water the very first thing you do in the morning before your coffee or tea. Proper hydration helps maintain healthy blood volume and supports optimal vascular function.

Starting Your Day Right

Pairing these gentle morning adjustments with your prescribed medications, regular physical activity, and heart-healthy dietary choices goes a long way in keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers stable.
