Weak or Brittle Nails: What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You

It looks like we’ve circled back to the brittle nails topic! Since we previously looked at how nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, and thyroid health can manifest in your fingernails, let’s look at a few other subtle clues your nails can give you about your overall health:
  • White Spots (Leukonychia): A very common sight, these usually aren’t a sign of a calcium deficiency as old wives’ tales claim. Instead, they are most often harmless the result of minor bumps or trauma to the nail matrix (the base under your cuticle) where the nail grows.
  • Vertical Ridges: These fine, raised lines running from your cuticle to the tip are usually just a natural part of aging, much like wrinkles on the skin. However, if they become deep or are accompanied by splitting, it can point to severe dryness.
  • Horizontal Grooves (Beau’s Lines): Unlike vertical ridges, deep horizontal indents across the nail are your body’s way of pausing nail growth due to a significant stressor—such as a severe illness, high fever, or sudden physical trauma—weeks prior.
  • Spoon-Shaped Nails (Koilonychia): When nails become thin and concave enough to hold a tiny drop of liquid, it is a classic sign strongly linked to severe iron-deficiency anemia.
Even though nails grow slowly (only about 3 millimeters a month), they act like a slow-motion dashboard for your nutritional and systemic health over time.
Are you noticing a specific pattern or texture on your nails that made you look this up again?
