Normal Blood Pressure by Age
There is no single “normal” blood pressure number for each age. In general, healthy blood pressure goals are similar for most adults, but readings can vary depending on health conditions, medications, and individual risk factors.
A commonly used guide:
| Age group | Typical healthy blood pressure range |
|---|---|
| Children | Varies greatly by age, height, and sex |
| Teens | Around <120/80 mmHg is generally considered healthy |
| Adults (18+) | About <120/80 mmHg is considered normal |
| Older adults (65+) | Often still aim for around <120/80 to <130/80 mmHg, depending on health and medical advice |
Blood pressure categories for adults:
- Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 120–129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic
- High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 systolic or 80–89 diastolic
- High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140+ systolic or 90+ diastolic
- Hypertensive crisis: 180/120 or higher — requires urgent medical attention, especially with symptoms
