10 Warning Signs

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness — especially in the face, arm, or leg on one side.
  2. Face drooping — one side of the face may feel numb or appear uneven when smiling.
  3. Arm weakness — one arm may feel weak or drift downward when both arms are raised.
  4. Speech problems — speech may suddenly become slurred, confused, or difficult to understand.
  5. Sudden confusion — difficulty understanding what others are saying.
  6. Vision changes — sudden blurred, double, or reduced vision in one or both eyes.
  7. Loss of balance — sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, or poor coordination.
  8. Sudden severe headache — particularly a severe headache with no known cause.
  9. Difficulty understanding or communicating — trouble finding words or making sense of speech.
  10. Sudden symptoms that disappear — temporary symptoms can be a TIA (“warning stroke”) and still require emergency assessment.

Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.

B — Balance loss
E — Eye or vision changes
F — Face drooping
A — Arm weakness
S — Speech difficulty
T — Time to call emergency services

If any of these symptoms appear, even if they go away, seek emergency medical help immediately and note the time the symptoms started.

Bottom line: Don’t wait for stroke symptoms to improve on their own. Fast medical treatment can make an important difference.
