7 effective and safe methods
1. Drink plenty of water. Sip warm water, broth, or caffeine-free tea throughout the day. Hydration helps make mucus easier to clear.
2. Gargle with salt water. Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, and spit it out. Repeat a few times daily.
3. Try honey. One or two teaspoons may soothe throat irritation and coughing. Never give honey to children under 12 months.
4. Use a humidifier. Clean it regularly. Avoid inhaling steam from boiling water because of burn risk.
5. Address nasal drainage. Saline nasal spray or rinsing may help if mucus is dripping from your nose. Use only sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for nasal rinses.
6. Avoid irritants. Smoking, vaping, dust, and strong fragrances can worsen mucus and throat irritation.
7. Consider medicines carefully. An expectorant such as guaifenesin may help some people, but check with a pharmacist, especially if pregnant or taking other medicines. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed.
Seek urgent medical care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or severe throat swelling. Consult a clinician if symptoms persist beyond 2–3 weeks, or sooner if you have fever, blood in mucus, or worsening symptoms.
One question: Is your mucus thick and sticky, constantly dripping from your nose into your throat, or associated with coughing? This helps identify the most effective treatment.
