How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains from Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be difficult to remove, but with the right treatment, you can often restore your clothes without damaging the fabric.
1. Apply dishwashing liquid: Lay the stained garment on a flat surface. Apply a few drops of grease-cutting dishwashing liquid directly to the stain. Gently rub it in with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
2. Let it sit: Leave the detergent on the stain for 15–30 minutes to help break down the grease. For older stains, you may need to repeat this step.
3. Use laundry detergent: Apply liquid laundry detergent to the affected area and gently work it into the fabric. Follow the garment’s care label.
4. Wash in warm water: Wash the garment using the warmest water temperature permitted by its care label. Avoid hot water on delicate fabrics or materials that may shrink.
5. Check before drying: Inspect the stain after washing. If grease remains, repeat the treatment before drying. Never put the garment in a dryer until the stain is completely gone, because heat can make it harder to remove.
Extra tip: For stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch over the grease before applying dish soap. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then brush it off.
Always test cleaning products on a hidden area first. Avoid rubbing delicate fabrics aggressively, and never mix cleaning products such as bleach and ammonia.
