5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

5 colors you don’t have to avoid after 50

There is no medical or fashion rule saying certain colors become wrong after 50. What flatters you depends much more on your skin undertone, hair color, contrast level, and personal style than your age.

That said, some shades can look less flattering on certain people because they may emphasize redness, sallowness, or shadows.

  • Very pale beige: Can sometimes blend into the skin and make the complexion look washed out.

  • Yellow-green/chartreuse: May emphasize yellow or uneven undertones in some complexions.

  • Dusty gray: Can make a low-contrast complexion appear less vibrant.

  • Muddy olive: Sometimes makes warm or sallow undertones look more pronounced.

  • Neon shades: Their intense contrast can overpower the face rather than complement it.

Better approach: test the color near your face

Hold a garment or fabric under your chin in natural light. If your complexion looks brighter and more even, the shade is probably working for you. If it emphasizes shadows or redness, try a different version of the same color.

For example, instead of eliminating blue, you might prefer navy, cobalt, or a softer powder blue depending on your coloring.

Bottom line: Turning 50 doesn’t mean you need a new list of forbidden colors. Wear the shades that make you feel confident and that complement your individual coloring.
