What Happens When You Eat Walnuts Every Day…See more

What happens when you eat walnuts every day?

Eating a moderate amount of walnuts regularly can be a nutritious habit. Walnuts provide unsaturated fats, plant protein, fiber, minerals, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid.

Potential benefits

  • ❤️ Heart health: Replacing foods high in saturated fat with walnuts and other nuts can improve the overall quality of your diet. Studies have also found improvements in cholesterol-related measures with regular walnut consumption.

  • 🧠 Brain health: Walnuts contain ALA and antioxidant compounds. They are nutritious, but claims that eating walnuts directly “prevents dementia” or dramatically improves memory go beyond what the evidence establishes.

  • 🩸 Cholesterol: Regular nut consumption can modestly improve LDL cholesterol in some people.

  • 🍽️ Satiety: Their combination of fat, protein, and fiber can help you feel full.

  • 🌱 Gut health: The fiber and other plant compounds in walnuts can support a diverse gut microbiome.

How much?

A practical serving is about 1 ounce (28 g), roughly a small handful or 7 whole shelled walnuts. Walnuts are calorie-dense, so eating large quantities isn’t necessarily better.

Choose unsalted, preferably unflavored walnuts when possible.

A few cautions

  • Anyone with a tree-nut allergy should avoid walnuts.

  • Large amounts can cause digestive discomfort in some people.

  • If you have chronic kidney disease, walnuts may need to be considered in the context of your individual potassium and phosphorus limits.

  • Walnuts aren’t a replacement for prescribed cholesterol, diabetes, or cardiovascular medications.

Bottom line: A small serving of walnuts each day can be a useful addition to a balanced diet, particularly when it replaces less nutritious snacks. It isn’t a miracle food, though, and the benefits come from the overall dietary pattern rather than walnuts alone.
