What does the color of your urine say about your health?

Urine color can offer clues about hydration and certain health issues, but it cannot diagnose a condition by itself. Food, medications, vitamins, and exercise can also change its appearance.

Color Possible explanation
🟨 Pale yellow Usually normal and often indicates good hydration.
🟡 Dark yellow/amber Commonly associated with dehydration.
🟠 Orange Can occur with dehydration or certain medicines; occasionally associated with liver or bile-duct problems.
🩷 Pink/red May be blood, but beets and some medicines can also cause reddish urine.
🟤 Brown/tea-colored Can occur with severe dehydration, some medicines, liver problems, or muscle breakdown and should be evaluated if unexplained.
🟢 Green Uncommon; certain medications, dyes, or occasionally urinary infections can cause it.
🔵 Blue Rare and usually related to medications, dyes, or unusual metabolic conditions.
⚪ Cloudy/milky Can occur with a urinary infection, crystals, or other substances in the urine.
🫧 Persistently very foamy May indicate excess protein in the urine and is worth testing.

🚨 When should you get checked?

Don’t ignore red, dark-brown, or persistently abnormal urine when there is no obvious explanation. Medical evaluation is especially important if you also have pain, fever, weakness, swelling, or reduced urine production.

Cloudy urine accompanied by burning, frequent urination, fever, or pain in the back/side can indicate a urinary infection.

For suspected kidney problems, a urinalysis, urine albumin test, and blood tests such as creatinine/eGFR provide much more useful information than color alone.

💧 What color should it be?

For many healthy people, pale yellow is a reasonable indication of adequate hydration. Completely clear urine isn’t necessarily better, and you shouldn’t force excessive amounts of water just to keep it clear.

If you tell me the exact urine color and whether you have any other symptoms, I can explain the most likely possibilities.
