The Plastic-Bottle Washing-Machine Trick
You may have seen the viral tip of putting an empty plastic bottle in the washing machine. The idea is that, during the wash cycle, the bottle moves around with the clothes and can help agitate and separate garments, potentially reducing tangling and helping water and detergent circulate.
However, it isn’t a magic cleaning hack, and it’s not recommended for every washing machine or bottle.
If you want to try it

Use a clean, sturdy PET bottle with the cap firmly secured.

Remove the label and any loose plastic.

Put it in with a normal load of laundry.

Stop immediately if the bottle becomes damaged or the machine makes unusual banging noises.
A safer alternative
For most washing machines, you don’t need the bottle at all. To improve washing performance:

Turn clothes inside out when appropriate.

Use the recommended amount of detergent.

Clean the washer’s filter and detergent drawer regularly.
Important: Don’t put a bottle in a dryer. Heat can deform plastic and potentially create a mess or damage the appliance.
If you’re referring to the viral trick where the bottle is supposed to remove hair, lint, or pet fur from clothes, that’s a different claim—the mechanism and usefulness are different.
