How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

If you have phlegm/mucus in your chest and throat, the goal is usually to thin it and help your body clear it, rather than trying to stop the cough completely.

Natural things you can try

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water, warm tea, broth, and warm lemon water can help thin mucus and make it easier to cough up. nhs.uk+1

  • Honey in warm water or tea. About 1–2 teaspoons can soothe an irritated throat and may reduce coughing. Never give honey to a child under 1 year. Mayo Clinic+1

  • Take a warm, steamy shower. Moist air can help loosen congestion. A cool-mist humidifier is another option; keep it clean to prevent mold and bacteria. Mayo Clinic+1

  • Gargle warm salt water if mucus is mainly bothering your throat: dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, and spit it out. nhs.uk

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated. Extra pillows can make breathing easier and help mucus clear. nhs.uk

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, which can irritate your airways and worsen mucus and coughing. Mayo Clinic

  • Rest. If the mucus is from a respiratory infection, most uncomplicated infections improve on their own. nhs.uk

A simple drink

Try warm water + 1–2 teaspoons honey + lemon. You can drink it a few times during the day for throat comfort. nhs.uk

When to get medical help

Seek urgent medical care if you have difficulty breathing, significant chest pain, or cough up blood/pink-tinged mucus. Mayo Clinic

Also get medical advice if the cough lasts more than 3 weeks, is rapidly worsening, or is accompanied by fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, or persistent thick/discolored phlegm. Mayo Clinic+1

If you tell me how many days you’ve had the mucus, its color (clear/white/yellow/green), whether you have a cough or fever, and whether it’s worse in the chest or throat, I can help you narrow down what may be causing it and what to do next.
