Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car, Here Is Why Every Driver Should Try It

If you’re asking whether putting a glass of salt in your car actually works, the claim is partly based on a real property of salt but is often exaggerated.

🧂 Why people put salt in a car

A bowl or glass of ordinary table salt is sometimes recommended as a cheap moisture absorber. Salt can absorb some moisture under certain conditions, so the idea is that it might help reduce humidity and condensation inside the vehicle.

However, a glass of dry table salt is not a particularly effective car dehumidifier. Commercial moisture absorbers (often containing calcium chloride or silica gel) generally work much better.

What it might help with

  • Minor condensation: It may absorb a limited amount of moisture.

  • Musty smell: Reducing humidity can sometimes help indirectly.

  • Damp interiors: It may provide a small benefit if the car has mild moisture problems.

⚠️ What salt will NOT do

It won’t reliably:

  • Prevent windshield fogging while driving

  • Fix a water leak

  • Remove significant humidity from a wet carpet

  • Repair an air-conditioning/dehumidification problem

  • Prevent mold if the underlying water intrusion remains

Also, don’t spill salt on metal surfaces. Salt plus moisture can contribute to corrosion
