5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

If you’re creating a beauty/fashion post, a more accurate framing is that some shades can make the complexion look less vibrant for certain people after 50, rather than saying they universally “dull your glow.”

5 colors you may want to reconsider after 50

  1. Muddy beige — Can blend too closely with the skin and make the face look washed out.

  2. Dull olive or khaki — These yellow-green tones can emphasize sallowness in some complexions.

  3. Ashy gray — Especially near the face, cool gray can sometimes make skin appear less lively.

  4. Mustard yellow — Its strong yellow undertone may highlight uneven or yellowish undertones in some skin.

  5. Very dark brown — A harsh brown close to the face can create a heavy, shadowed effect.

The key: age itself doesn’t determine which colors suit you. Undertone, contrast level, hair color, lighting, and personal style matter much more. Often, changing the shade—for example, choosing warm camel instead of muddy beige or soft charcoal instead of ashy gray—can make a bigger difference than avoiding a whole color family.
