SIGNS THAT YOUR HEART IS NOT RIGHT, PAY ATTENTION

Signs that your heart may need attention

Heart problems don’t always begin with dramatic chest pain. Some symptoms can be subtle, especially in women, older adults, and people with diabetes.

Watch for these warning signs:

  1. Chest pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or pain — particularly if it occurs with activity or spreads to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw.

  2. Shortness of breath — especially during ordinary activities or when lying down.

  3. Unusual fatigue or weakness — particularly when it’s new or significantly worse than usual.

  4. Fast, pounding, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat — persistent or recurrent palpitations deserve medical evaluation.

  5. Dizziness or fainting — especially during exertion.

  6. Swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs — can occur when the heart isn’t pumping effectively.

  7. Sudden sweating, nausea, or a feeling of impending illness — these can accompany a heart attack, sometimes without prominent chest pain.

  8. Reduced ability to exercise — becoming unexpectedly breathless or exhausted with activities you previously tolerated.

🚨 Don’t wait for symptoms to pass

If you have new or severe chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, fainting, cold sweats, or pain/discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, seek emergency medical care immediately. A heart attack can occur with mild or atypical symptoms, so it’s safer to be assessed urgently.

Having one of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have heart disease—many other conditions can cause them. But new, persistent, or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
