The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

There isn’t a definitive list of five drinks that “damage your bones.” However, some beverages can contribute to poorer bone health when consumed frequently or in large amounts.

Five to limit

  1. Cola and other sugar-sweetened soft drinks — Frequent consumption can displace calcium-rich drinks from the diet and is associated in some studies with lower bone health. The evidence is not strong enough to say that cola directly “destroys” bones.

  2. Heavy alcohol consumption — Excessive alcohol can interfere with calcium balance, vitamin D metabolism, and bone formation and increases fracture risk.

  3. Energy drinks — Often contain substantial caffeine and added sugar. The main concern is when they replace nutritious beverages or contribute to excessive caffeine intake.

  4. Very high amounts of caffeinated drinks — Caffeine can slightly increase calcium loss in urine, but moderate intake is generally compatible with healthy bones when calcium intake is adequate.

  5. Sugary fruit drinks and sweetened beverages — They can add substantial sugar and calories without providing much calcium or other bone-supporting nutrients.

What matters more

For bone health, focus on adequate calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing/resistance exercise, sufficient protein, not smoking, and limiting heavy alcohol use.

You don’t necessarily need to eliminate coffee, tea, or an occasional soft drink. Overall dietary pattern and lifestyle matter much more than one particular beverage.
