A cardiologist reveals the number one exercise to prevent a heart attack

The “number one” exercise for heart health

There isn’t one exercise that can guarantee prevention of a heart attack. However, brisk walking is an excellent, accessible form of aerobic exercise and is specifically recommended by the American Heart Association. Regular physical activity can reduce cardiovascular risk and improve blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and fitness. www.heart.org+1

A practical target for most adults is:

  • 30 minutes of brisk walking, 5 days a week — about 150 minutes of moderate activity.

  • If 30 minutes at once is difficult, 10-minute walks throughout the day still count.

  • Add strength training at least twice a week. www.heart.org+1

If you’ve been inactive, have known heart disease, or develop chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting during exercise, get medical advice rather than suddenly starting strenuous exercise.
