Constant phlegm in your throat and you don’t know why…

Constant Phlegm in Your Throat? Here Are the Common Reasons

A constant feeling of mucus or phlegm in the throat is common, and it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an infection. Often, the sensation comes from mucus draining from the nose or irritation of the throat.

Common causes

  1. Postnasal drip — Allergies, sinus irritation, or a lingering cold can cause mucus to drain down the back of the throat.

  2. Allergies — Dust, pollen, mold, and other triggers can increase nasal mucus.

  3. Acid reflux — GERD or laryngopharyngeal reflux can cause throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, or a lump-like sensation.

  4. Smoking or vaping — Irritates the airways and can increase mucus production.

  5. Asthma or other airway conditions — May cause cough, mucus, wheezing, or chest tightness.

  6. Dry air or dehydration — Can make normal mucus thicker and more noticeable.

  7. Respiratory infection — A cold or other infection can temporarily increase mucus production.

What you can try

  • Drink enough water throughout the day.

  • Use a saline nasal spray or rinse if you have congestion or postnasal drip.

  • Avoid cigarette smoke and vaping.

  • If reflux seems likely, avoid large meals shortly before lying down and identify foods that consistently trigger symptoms.

  • Consider a clean humidifier if the air is very dry.

Don’t repeatedly forcefully clear your throat—it can further irritate the throat and create a cycle of irritation and throat clearing.

When to get checked

See a healthcare professional if the problem persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, wheezing, or breathing difficulties.

Coughing up blood, severe shortness of breath, or significant chest pain requires urgent medical attention.

And remember: yellow or green mucus doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. The underlying cause matters more than mucus color.
