Castor oil on feet: The trick everyone over 65 is using

Castor Oil on the Feet: What Does It Actually Do?

The claim that everyone over 65 is using castor oil on their feet is a marketing-style exaggeration. Castor oil can moisturize dry skin, but there isn’t good evidence that rubbing it on your feet provides special health benefits simply because you’re over 65.

What castor oil may help with

  • Dry, rough skin: Its oily, occlusive properties can help reduce moisture loss.

  • Cracked heels: It may soften dry skin when used with a regular moisturizer and gentle foot care.

  • Skin comfort: Massaging the feet with an oil can feel soothing, although that doesn’t mean it treats an underlying medical condition.

What it won’t reliably do

There isn’t good evidence that applying castor oil to the feet will:

  • Improve blood circulation

  • Remove toxins

  • Treat arthritis or neuropathy

  • Cure leg cramps

  • Lower blood sugar

  • Restore sensation

  • “Pull” disease or inflammation out of the body

If you want to try it

Apply a small amount to intact, dry skin, preferably after bathing, and stop if irritation develops. Avoid putting it on open wounds or infected skin. Because oil makes surfaces slippery, be particularly careful about walking immediately afterward, especially for older adults.

If you have diabetes, poor circulation, numbness, or foot wounds, don’t rely on castor oil for treatment. Foot problems in these situations can require professional assessment.

If the viral post gives a specific castor-oil recipe or claims it treats a particular condition, paste it here and I can separate the evidence-based advice from the exaggerated claims.
